The Question Everyone Asks
“Is it going to hurt?” It is the number one question new patients ask us. And it makes sense. You may have seen dramatic “cracking” videos online. Or a friend told you a story.
Here is the short answer: For most people, a chiropractic adjustment does not hurt. In fact, many patients find it relieving and relaxing.
At The Alignment Studio in Irvine, CA, Dr. Monica Scott is known for her gentle approach. Let’s walk through what really happens.
What Is an Adjustment?
An adjustment is a quick, controlled movement applied to a joint. The goal is to restore normal motion to joints that are stiff or not moving well. When joints move better, muscles relax, pressure on nerves can ease, and pain often decreases.
What Is That “Pop” Sound?
The pop is not your bones cracking. And it is not anything breaking.
Your joints are surrounded by fluid. This fluid contains dissolved gases. When a joint is gently opened during an adjustment, the pressure changes. This creates a small gas bubble, which makes the popping sound. It is the same thing that happens when you crack your knuckles.
Here is something many people don’t know: the pop is not required. An adjustment can be effective with or without the sound.
What Does an Adjustment Feel Like?
Most patients describe it as:
- A quick stretch or pressure
- A feeling of release or “unlocking”
- Lightness and easier movement afterward
If an area is very inflamed or sore, you might feel brief tenderness. Dr. Monica always adjusts her technique to your comfort level.
Is It Normal to Be Sore After?
Some people feel mild soreness for a day or so after their first few adjustments. It is similar to how you feel after a new workout. Your body is adapting to better movement. Staying hydrated, walking, and gentle stretching help.
Sharp or worsening pain is not normal. If that happens, let us know.
Nervous About Getting Adjusted? You Have Options
If you are anxious, you are not alone. And you are always in control. Here is how we make adjustments comfortable:
1. We Explain Everything First
Dr. Monica tells you what she is going to do before she does it. No surprises.
2. Gentle Techniques Are Available
Not every adjustment involves twisting or popping. Dr. Monica can use gentler, low-force approaches when that feels better for you.
3. We Warm Up the Muscles
Soft tissue therapy and Rapid Release relax tight muscles first. This makes adjustments easier and more comfortable.
4. You Can Say No
If you are not comfortable with a certain type of adjustment, just tell us. We will find another way.
Is Chiropractic Care Safe?
Chiropractic adjustments are considered safe for most people when performed by a licensed, trained chiropractor. Before your first adjustment, Dr. Monica reviews your health history and performs a full exam. When needed, on-site X-rays help ensure care is safe and appropriate for you.
Don’t Let Nerves Hold You Back
